Eagles Rally to Top Cabrini

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern University Women's Soccer used three goals in the final 25 minutes of play to erase an early deficit and earn a 3-1 home win over local rival Cabrini College. Charlotte Laurie recorded her first multi-goal game as an Eagle to power the Eastern attack.

The Eagles had the bulk of possession early, but that possession only created three shots in the first half hour of play. The Cavaliers (2-1) were content to absorb pressure and look for a counter-attack chance. That chance came in the 30th minute when Bethany Feinberg won a ball in the middle of the field and slotted a well-weighted pass toward the left side for Kara Hinkelmone. Hinkelmone timed her run perfectly and slotted a right-footed shot just inside the far post.

Down 1-0, the Eastern pressure increased, but the Cavalier defense fought off five shots and four corner kicks in the last ten minutes of the half to preserve the lead at intermission. The Eagles (2-2-1) held an 8-1 advantage in first-half shots.

The Eagles came out of the locker room with even more commitment to go forward. Laurie and Thomas missed wide ona couple golden chances and Kristine Zeiset hit the crossbar on a volley from 12 yards out in the 55th minute.

The shots kept coming but for a while it looked as though Cabrini goalkeeper Maddy Edwards and her defense might be able to hold the Eagles off the board.

"We've struggled to find that final touch," Head Coach Dan Mouw said of the game, "and for a while it looked like it might be one of those days when you do everything right and it just doesn't happen. Charlotte played well through the first half, and her goal came as a huge relief."

Laurie finally found the net after Allie Inch nodded a bouncing ball out of traffic after a corner kick. Laurie's left-footed shot curled just inside the left upright to tie the game.

With the equalizer in hand, the Eagles continued to press forward in the attack. Laurie completed the brace with another low shot after Michelle Brown slotted a ball between the last two defenders into the center of the box.  Brown then completed the scoring with an insurance goal in the 84th minute. Allie Inch picked up her second assist of the day.

"We came into this afternoon's game with a very concrete picture of how we wanted to play," Mouw stated, "and with the exception of some rough finishing and a little hiccup in the first half, I think we did those things. Cabrini is a good defensive team, and their goalkeeper is very active and athletic, so to get those last three was really important for our confidence."

The Eagles finished the game with a decisive 24-1 edge in shots.

Eastern will host Elizabethtown College on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
