ASTON, Pa.- Eastern University Men's Tennis swept all nine matches to
earn a non-league win at Neumann University this afternoon. The Eastern
depth paid dividends as they earned lopsided wins in the bottom four
flights of singles play.
Eastern (6-3) took all three doubles
matches without much trouble, and Bryan Arnett earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at
second singles.
The drama of the day came in the #1 singles slot
as Michael Roth battled Neumann's Chris Brown in a three set thriller.
Roth dropped the first set in a tie-breaker, but the Eastern senior
looked to have things in hand when he jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second
set. Brown, however, had other ideas, and the Neumann #1 took the next
five games and had a pair of match points at 5-3. Roth faught off match
points at 5-3 and 5-4 and 5-5 before earning a 7-5 second set win. He
would take the super-breaker 10-3.
"He was a classic
counter-puncher," Head Coach Mark Spangler said of Roth's opponent,
"Michael only had one unforced error in the super-breaker and he set up
his points really well. It is nice to see him getting his serve going
headed into this weekend."
The Eagles, who have won three straight
matches, will look to make it four when they play at Cabrini on
Thursday before resuming Freedom Conference action at Manhattanville on
Saturday.
