Men's Tennis Downed At Wilkes

Box Score

The Eastern University men's tennis team traveled to Wilkes University on Friday afternoon, riding a four game winning streak. The Eagles hit a road block, losing to the top team in the Freedom Conference 9-0.

Though the results look lopsided on paper, the Eagles showed a lot of grit and determination throughout the afternoon.

"Our first doubles team played very good tennis today," commented head coach Mark Spangler. "Jordan (Gates) and Tyler (Hoagland) played well at the net, but ended up falling short to a very good opponent."

The Eagles tried to rebound during singles play, but were unable to convert any sets into their favor. The Eagles top singles player, Jordan Gates was forced to retire during the second set despite losing his first set by a slim 6-4 margin.

"Jordan played tough today," remarked Spangler. "His knee injury shouldn't hold him out of tomorrows match against Misericordia."

Despite the loss, the Eagles remain in third place in the Freedom Conference with a record of 3-2. Eastern has a chance to lock up sole possession of the spot and the third seed in the conference tournament with a win over Misericordia tomorrow afternoon.

"Today was a learning experience for us," added Spangler. "Our guys stayed positive and are really looking forward to carrying the positives that we took from today's into tomorrow's match. We're in a good mindset right now."

Tomorrow's match is set for 12:00 PM in St. Davids, Pa.
