Men's Tennis Comes Up Short At Messiah

Box Score

Down 4-3 in the match, the Eagles' Tyler Hoagland picked up a fifth singles win to tie the match at 4 games a piece. Hoagland fell in his first set 6-2 and found himself down in his second set 4-3. However, the sophomore from Merritt Island, Fla. was able to rally back and win three straight games for a 6-4 win in set two. Hoagland then downed his opponent 10-7 to win the super tie breaker and the match.

Freshman Jonny Shenk found himself in a similar position in his sixth singles match. Shenk picked up his first set 6-2, but fell in the second 6-4, forcing a third set. However, Shenk was unable to convert in the final set losing 6-1.

Also winning big matches for the Eagles were Bryan Arnett and Dan Wilson. Arnett picked up a second singles victory 6-0, 6-0. Wilson used a strong tie breaker finish in his first set to propel him to victory 7-6, 6-4. Arnett and Wilson also picked up a win for Eastern at second doubles taking their match 8-1.

"We definitely showed improvement today," said head coach Mark Spangler. "We still need to improve our net play in doubles and find a way to finish game points and break points, but all-in-all it was a good test for us."

"We have a very good idea now of what we need to work on to prepare for our Freedom Conference opener at Manhattanville next Tuesday," added Spangler.

The Eagles do not return to the courts until the Manhattanville match in Purchase, N.Y. on Tuesday, April 6 at 3:30 PM. Eastern returns home on April 8 as they host another non-conference match with Lancaster Bible College also set to begin at 3:30 PM.
