matches to win the match 5-4. Eastern and Gwynedd-Mercy each took a decision on the second day of the match, but the Eagles had lost four straight singles matches and needed both Sean McGuinness and Michael Roth to win to take the match.
Roth breezed through the last four games of the second set to win 6-4, 6-3 at first singles. McGuninness fell in three sets at fifth singles.
Michael Roth and Jordan Gates eked
out a 9-7 win over Scott Campbell and Jared Morgan at first singles,
but the match came at a cost as Gates had sustained a minor injury that
kept him out of singles competition. Bryan Arnett and Sean McGuiness cruised to an 8-4 win at second doubles, and Dan Wilson and Taylor Kiser won 8-2 at the third spot.
Gwynedd-Mercy took advantage of the changes in the Eastern line-up as Morgan beat Arnett at the second spot. Erik Trinkle beat Kiser in a three set match and Lou Vessels downed Wilson 6-4, 7-6, and Chris Keown fought back from a 5-4 deficit in the second set to down Josh Hall 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Eastern Head Coach Mark Spangler was frustrated with his teams' singles play. "We played without Jordan, and that hurt us," Spangler said, "but we really need to step up and win some of those three set matches. We were up in each of them and could not put them away."
The Eagles return to action tomorrow afternoon at Neumann College.
