Box Score There was a Radnor firetruck on hand for Eastern Field Hockey's semifinal contest against the Misericordia University Cougars. There was no emergency. The ladder truck was there to support the Eagles, who had done work with the department's education program earlier in the year. The Eastern offense caught fire for five goals in the first 36 minutes, and Radnor's finest just cheered.
For the third year in a row, the Eastern University field hockey team will play in the conference final agaisnt Alvernia College. The Eagles used goals from five different players to beat third-seeded Misericordia 5-0 on a beautiful afternoon full of activity on Eastern's Athletic Complex.
With the second half of the women's soccer game going on several yards away, the Eastern squad had to find focus early. They knew that Misericordia had been an outstanding defensive team all year and a high value was put on getting an early goal. Junior Kim Campbell got Eastern that needed goal in the fifth minute on an unassisted tally. Coach Azzarano said of the goal, "The first goal of the game was really critical on this day. Kim has scored big goals all year, and today's was huge for us as well."
Up a goal, the Eagles continued to press the action and earned a penalty stroke in the 12th minute. Misericordia goalie Ellen Howanitz kept her teams hopes alive with a big save to keep the game at 1-0. Lindsay Moyer scored the critical second goal of the match in the 16th minute on another unassisted tally to give the Eagles a commanding lead.
Elya Troup scored from Lindsay Moyer in the 30th minute off a penalty corner, and the Eagles added a fourth just 80 seconds later when Jaimie Heck set up Stephanie Moyer on another penalty corner goal. The positive results on the penalty corners is a very encouraging sign for the Eagles, who had struggled mightily against the Cougars in that facet of their game in the regular season match-up.
Eastern fired 16 first half shots without giving one up in the first half. Howanitz made eight first half saves.
Heck scored just 35 seconds into the second half off an assist from Lindsay Moyer to give the Eagles their final margin. Eastern travels to Alvernia for a 2:00 pm game this Saturday in a contest that pits the last two PAC Champions against each other. Eastern won last year's championship game 2-0, but the Eagles fell to the 3-2 to the Crusaders earlier in the season.
