Baseball Routs Elmira on Second Day at Cal Ripken Experience

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Eastern Baseball found its offense on Wednesday afternoon, using a pair of big innings to come away with a 17-1 rout of Elmira at Cal Ripken Experience. After recording just three hits against Houghton to open its Spring Break trip, the Eagles rattled off 16 hits, scoring 11 runs in the second inning and six more in the sixth to secure its fifth win of the young season.

Ten Eagles recorded at least one hit in the win, while five finished with at least two knocks.  First-year designated hitter Matt McSorely collected a season-high three hits in four at-bats while scoring and driving in a pair of runs. Luke Meehan, Trent MacDougall, David Garrido, and Thomas Kozlusky combined for eight hits, six RBIs, and 10 runs scored. Meehan drove in a team-high three runs, while Kozlusky drove in a pair. Lane Heuer also drove in a pair of runs, and Robert Del Buono, Joe Scimone, Ryan Alfonso, and Elijah Kiernan each recorded a hit.

The Screaming Eagles struck first in the bottom of the first inning on a one-out RBI double from Jordan Barthel, but the Eagles took control of the game in the second frame, scoring 11 runs on nine hits. The Eagles sent 15 batters to the box in the inning. The Eagles loaded the bases with one out, and tied the game after Del Buono reached first on catchers interference. Meehan followed with a two-run single, and a third run scored on a throwing error in the same sequence to put the Eagles ahead 4-1. McSorely singled home Meehan to make it 5-1 before Elmira recorded its second out.

The Eagles scored six more runs with two outs. Two came on Heuer's two-run single to left, two more came on a Kozlusky double to right center, and the final two came on an RBI double from MacDougall and another RBI single from Meehan, giving the Eagles an 11-1 advantage.

Eastern tacked on six more runs in the fourth. Kozlusky scored on an error, McSorely scored Del Buono on an RBI single, Alfonso plated Meehan with a double down the left-field line, Trevor Harris scored McSorely on an RBI groundout, and Alfonso capped off the inning by scoring on a wild pitch.

With the offense doing its part, a pair of Eastern pitchers performed well in their second appearances of the season. First-year pitcher Marcelo Llorente (1-1) had an excellent second outing on the bump for the Eagles, allowing just four hits and one earned run in the first inning while striking out five. Fellow first-year Brady Maerz was equally as effective in relief, striking out six in the final two innings.

Eastern (5-3) will conclude its Spring Break trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against Saint Elizabeth tomorrow. Game one is slated to begin at 10:00 am.
