ST. DAVIDS, Pa.— A strong third quarter burst was not quite enough as Eastern University Men's Lacrosse dropped a 13-8 decision to the visiting Seahawks of St. Mary's of Maryland.
Frankie Fanelli,
Brett Gougler, and
Maxwell Forrey each scored twice, but the Eagles could never fully close the gap as the Seahawks (6-4) scored three-straight to start the fourth to pull away.
Down 7-2 at the half, the Eagles started the second half with three-straight goals. Though they lost the opening faceoff,
Jack Bradley forced a ball free and Fanelli scored his first of the day off an assist from
Brett Williamson to build a little momentum. After a save by
Brendan Kirn and a
Jackson Foley ground ball, Gougler knocked home bounce shot to trim the deficit to 7-4.
Andrew Horensky claimed a tough ground ball pick-up on the next faceoff and Forrey finished high-to-high from close range after shrugging off several defenders to close the gap to two with nine minutes left in the third. When the Seahawks answered, the Eagles again had a response.
Levi Souder ripped home his second of the year to again close the gap.
Down two men with two minutes left, the Eastern man-down unit killed off a single penalty, but the Seahawks tallied on a step-down from the left alley as the second penalty was coming to a close to build the lead back to three goals.
Eastern got man-up goals from Williamson and Fanelli in the fourth, but the Seahawks unraveled Eastern's third-quarter progress with three goals to start the fourth.
Ben Souder won 11-of-22 faceoffs and Foley and
Zach Puckett each finished with four ground balls.
The Eagles (1-8) have a final non-league test at Stevens Institute of Technology next Saturday before opening league play at Widener the following week. Stevens will be the third nationally ranked team the Eagles will see out of league.
