Baseball Falls in Pitchers' Duel at York

YORK, Pa.— The two teams opened the series with a combined for 44 hits in yesterday's doubleheader, but in today's finale at York, it was the pitchers who carried the day. Brennan Moloughney allowed only three hits and a single run over 7.2 innings, but it was not enough as York starter Brian McDermott held the Eagles to just two hits in eight innings for a 1-0 win.

Though the Eagles (11-5, 1-2) had runners in scoring position in both the sixth and ninth innings, their only two hits came on a Trent MacDougall infield single in the fourth and a two-out knock from Thomas Koslusky in the eighth.

Koslusky walked and reached third on a wild throw on a pick-off attempt with one out in the sixth. The Spartans made a play to get Koslusky at the plate on MacDougall's ground ball back to the pitcher. Eastern's other chance came after a McDougall walk against a Spartan reliever to start the ninth. He advanced to third on a sacrifice and a ground out, but Justin DiCesare hit a line drive right at the center fielder to end the game.

Moloughney's outing marks just the second time in the last twenty years of Eastern Baseball an Eastern pitcher has allowed fewer that two runs over seven or more innings and not picked up a win. Mike McNulty allowed only one  run over eight innings as Eastern and King's played to a 15-inning 1-1 tie in 2011. Only two other times in that stretch has an Eastern team allowed only one run in a game and lost. Nick Moeltner in 2012 and Tyler Bennett in 2018 both dropped 1-0 decisions in seven-inning games.

A lead-off walk and a wild pitch in the in the third gave the Spartans (6-7, 2-1) their first base-runner of the game. Moloughney struck out a hitter, one of six on the day, and got a short fly ball for a second out, but Lucas Prendergast doubled to center to drive in the run. The York second baseman has a two-base hit in each of his last five games and seven of his last eight. That run wound up being the difference.

York got a two-out double in the fifth and did not get another baserunner until a one-out walk in the eighth. A bunt single built that rally and gave the Spartans a scoring opportunity and  their third hit of the day. Moloughney got the second out and Brady Maerz retired the final York hitter with a ground out.

The Eagles are slated to be at Muhlenberg on Wednesday before returning to league play for a weekend set with Hood College. Hood won the first two games of the series with Stevenson.
