ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - On a beautiful but blistery day at the Yard, Eastern Baseball split its MAC Commonwealth opening doubleheader with the York Spartans. The Eagles used a five-run third inning and strong days at the plate from
Trent MacDougall and
Matt McSorley to come away with a 7-1 win in game one. McSorley hit a two-run home run in both games, while MacDougall hit his second long ball in as many games in the opener.Â
MacDougall finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and three RBI, while McSorley's one hit went over the right-center field wall.
Ryan Alfonso and
Luke Meehan also drive in runs for the Eagles.
Robert Del Buono finished with a double and
Thomas Kozlusky scored a pair of runs.
Graham Adams (3-0) earned his third win of the season, escaping multiple jams and allowing just five hits and one run while striking out.
Peter Mellana was equally as effective in relief, giving up one hit in the final two innings of work.
After a scoreless first two innings, Del Buono jumpstarted Eastern's big inning with a one-out double with left field. Kozlusky followed with a walk, and MacDougall plated Del Buono with an RBI single through the right side to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. An Alfonso RBI bunt single and an Meehan RBI groundout to make it 3-0, and McSorley capped off the inning with his first two-run home run of the day. York had runners on second and third with nobody out and the bases loaded with one out in the top of the fourth, but Adams was able to get out of the frame unscathed and with the lead still intact.
MacDougall, after not hitting a home run in his first two years with the Eagles, hit his second one since Tuesday in the fifth. On a 0-1 count, MacDougall launched a pitch over the left-center field fence, putting the Eagles ahead 7-0. York's Lucas Prendergast broke up the shutout bid with a home run to right center field, but the Spartans were kept off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
The Eagles battled valiantly in game two, battling back from 4-0 and 5-1 deficits.
Matthew Gonglik hit his first home run of the spring in the fourth and the Eagles scored a pair of runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-3, before McSorley hit his second home run of the afternoon with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 5-5. The first-year outfielder now has home runs in three consecutive games and leads the Eagles with four round-trippers.
The Eagles had the bases loaded in the eighth inning, but could not score the go-ahead run. York's Matthew Wade came through in the top of the ninth inning, hitting an RBI single to right field to help the Spartans even the series. MacDougall, McSorley, Gonglik, and Del Buono each finished with a pair of hits in game two.
Eastern (11-4, 1-1) will conclude its series with the Spartans tomorrow at York. First pitch at Jacquet Field is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
