WEST LIBERTY, W.V.— After one day of action at the NCAA Women's Wrestling Region 2 Tournament, Eastern University Women's Wrestling has seven wrestlers still competing. IN the program's first year, the Eagles have five competitors through to the semifinals and two more alive in the consolation bracket. The top three wrestlers at every weight class will earn a bid to the first ever NCAA Women's Wrestling Championship.
After a first-round bye,
Jesenia Camargo punched her ticket to the semifinals with a 10-0 win by technical fall in just over a minute.
Josey Wehr needed two wins to reach the semis. After earning a win by technical fall in her opener, Wehr needed to rally from a 7-2 deficit to claim a 12-9 win in the over the six seed from Bethany. Out of a bad position early in the second round, Wehr changed the match with a four-point move. She then scored three more take-downs before giving up two points late.
Savannah Witt, the top seed at 124, earned a quick 10-0 win in her only match of the day, and
Zoey Haines picked up a couple pins at 145. Haines, who wrestled for less than 90 seconds total, has notched seven-straight pins and now has 20 victories by fall this year. All 26 of Witt's wins have been by fall or technical fall. She has yet to lose to an NCAA wrestler.
As the fifth seed coming in,
Olivia Kinder needed to beat the four seed from the host school in her second round match. Kinder worked out of a difficult spot early but still trailed 4-0 at the break. With a four-point move right at the edge of the circle, Kinder took the lead by criteria in a 4-4 match. After giving up a pair of single points, Kinder retied the match with another take-down, but she trailed 10-6 heading into the final 30 seconds. She tied the match with another big move and had her opponent fighting to avoid the pin when the clock expired. With the score at 10-10, Kinder advanced by decision with the four-point moves holding weight over the less valuable actions.
Paige Jackson opened the meet with a technical fall win but fell to MAC rival Maura White from York in the final thirty seconds of her quarterfinal. Jackson then earned a pin in her first match of the back draw she will face Arcadia's Molly Lubenow, who finished third at the MAC Championships to move into the consolation semifinals.
Anaelis Morales also moved into the consolation semifinals. She started the day with a win by technical fall before falling in the quarterfinals. Like Jackson, she earned a win in her first consolation bracket match to stay alive. She will go against Alvernia's Remiah Rivera in her first match tomorrow.
Maya Kreiger opened the day with a win before dropping a pair of matches to end her season. She finishes her first year with 16 wins.
As a team, the Eagles currently sit in fourth behind Lehigh, Ursinus, and Loch Haven. All three of those squads have six wrestlers in the championship bracket.
Wrestling will resume tomorrow morning. Fans with a Flo Sports account can watch all the matches live.
