READING, Pa. - Eastern Women's Basketball led the majority of its contest with Alvernia on Tuesday night, but the Golden Wolves outscored the Eagles 22-9 in the final frame to hand Eastern a 50-47 loss. The Eagles held a 40-28 at the end of the third quarter and a 43-31 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Golden Wolves shot 45 percent in the final frame to seal the comeback victory.
After Alvernia got the Eastern lead down to single digits early in the fourth, first-year guard
Adriana Summersett hit a free throw and a running layup to put the Eagles back ahead by 12. From there, the Golden Wolves clawed their way back, trimming the Eastern advantage down to two with 2:19 to play.
Jeriyah Johnson scored Eastern's last field goal with 1:39 remaining to put the Eagles up 47-45.
After the Eagles failed to score on their next possession, the Golden Wolves secured an offensive rebound to secure a fresh 20 on the shot clock. From there, after a timeout, former Eagle Taryn Woodson scored a layup and was fouled with 15 seconds left. Woodson converted on the ensuing free throw, giving Alvernia its first lead of the contest. The Eagles had a chance on the other end, but failed to convert, and Jenna DeGout knocked down a pair of insurance free throws with two seconds left to seal the win for the home team.
Both teams had trouble scoring in the first quarter before DeGout finally broke the scoreless tie with 5:34 on the clock.
Tychelle Gordon converted a putback for Eastern's first points, and
Damiyae Moyet followed with a three.
Aarin Manuel hit a three of her own later in the period to put the Eagles ahead 8-4.
Madeline Wylie, who scored eight points on four-of-six shooting, scored her first basket with under a minute remaining, and Manuel hit a shot at the buzzer to give the Eagles a 12-6 advantage heading into the second quarter.
The Eagles built on their momentum in the second quarter, eventually increasing their lead to 26-14. Wylie scored another pair of baskets in the paint, before threes from Summersett and Moyet put the Eagles and another basket for Johnson gave the Eagles their 14 point advantage. The Golden Wolves trimmed the lead to seven as the quarter wore on, but the Eagles took a 26-19 lead into the halftime break.
Eastern kept its lead between 8-12 points in the third frame. The Golden Wolves again cut the Eagles' advantage to single digits late in the quarter, but a pair of free throws from
Sophia Vera and a three from Johnson put the Eagles up 40-28 heading into the final period. The Eastern offense went cold from there, hitting just three field goals, none from beyond the arc, in the final 10 minutes.
Johnson led the Eagles with 13 points, while Moyet finished with nine. Wylie missed just two goals and scored eight points to go along with a team-high 12 rebounds.
Eastern (7-17, 2-11) will conclude its 2025 season at home on Saturday against Hood.
