ST. DAVIDS, Pa.—Eastern University Women's Basketball found the range from deep and used 17 second-half points from
Jeriyah Johnson to pull away to a 70-54 MAC Commonwealth win over the visiting Alvernia University Golden Wolves. Johnson finished with 21 points to lead four Eagles in double figures in the wire-to-wire win.
Up 35-31at halftime, the Eagles pulled away in the second half. Alvernia (8-10, 3-4) scored just six points in the third quarter, and the Eastern lead grew to 19 points when Johnson hit a 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter. The Eagles made 8-of-15 shots in the final frame while limiting turnovers as the Golden Wolves tried to scramble the game with a run-and-jump press.
Eastern (7-11, 2-5) scored the first two baskets of the game on a driving lay-up from
Ariyana Hester and a corner 3-pointer from
Damiyae Moyet before the Golden Wolves tied the game at five on a pir of inside baskets and a free throw from former Eagle Taryn Woodson. Seventeen seconds later, Hester found Moyet alone on the perimeter, and the senior guard connected for her second of three 3-pointers to put the Eagles up for good. Moyet finished the game with 11 points on seven shots, and Hester had ten points, six assists, five rebounds, four steals, and a blocked shot.
Six different Eagles scored points and the Eagles led 22-11 after one quarter. The Golden Wolves scored the first six points of the second quarter, but Eastern found answers with jumpers from Johnson and Hester and a tough floater from Arin Manuel. Though Moyet and Adrianna Summersett each made 3-pointers in the latter half of the frame, the Golden Wolves scored the final two baskets of the half to cut the Eastern lead to five. At the break, Moyet led the Eagles with nine points, and Summersett had eight.
Summersett finished with 15 points and a pair of steals. The Eagles won the rebounding battle 41-32.
Woodson led Alvernia with 16 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
With her 21 points today, Johnson now has 1292 career points and moves into the eighth spot on Eastern's career scoring list. She passed Joan Spaventa '91 and is now 10 points behind Regie Robinson '19. She is currently fourth on the program list with 165 made 3-pointers.
The Eagles will play at Albright at 3:00 pm this Saturday. The Lions are 4-2 in the league with a win over Messiah, but they have dropped two-straight in the league and are slated to play Stevenson in Reading tomorrow.
