ST. DAVIDS, Pa.— Eastern University Women's Volleyball (10-4) swept a pair of non-league matches in the team's only home tri-match of the year. The Eagles beat the Susquehanna University Riverhawks in the opener and handled local rival Immaculata in the final match of the day.
In the opening match, the Eagles ground out a 27-25 win in the opening set. The Eagles built a 23-20 lead in the set, but the Riverhawks won three of the next four points to extend the set. The teams traded sideouts until
Kallie Rogers delivered the opening set with an ace. When called upon,
Alexis Standford dominated. The junior outside hit over the around and through the Susquehanna block for seven kills on only nine swings. The Eagles hit .289 with 20 kills in the first.
The Eagles dominated the second set. With Pringle connecting for seven kills and
Viviana Fragoso picking up seven digs, the Eagles held their guests to a negative hitting percentage on the way to a 25-16 win. The Riverhawks found their only joy in the set while blocking. They scored six points with the block.
Set three was close. An early service run put Susquehanna up 7-2, but the Eagles grabbed the lead at 13-12 with
Sarah Furey serving. The teams traded points to 19-19 before Furey served the final five points of the set. Standford had a block and a kill in the run, and
Jessie Schreiber delivered the final kill of the match.
Pringle finished with 15 points and 12 kills for her fifth career and fifth consecutive double-double. Stanford had 14 kills, and Fragoso had 18 digs and four service aces.
In the second match, the Eagles (10-4) served aggressively and put together big runs against Immaculata. The Eagles finished with 17 service aces and hit .245 as a team. Eastern won the opening set 25-13 and was up 9-0 on a
Grace Cooper service run. The Mighty Macs scrapped back and took a 21-19 lead.
Josie Arezina delivered a big kill to earn a critical sideout. With Furey serving and Eastern out of substitutions, Standford and
Maddie Golia combined for a stuff-block to tie the set at 21-21. Furey delivered an ace for a 22-21 lead. Standford put away her second kill of the set for a two-point edge, and the lead grew to three on Furey's second ace of the frame.
Immaculata called a timeout, but Furey served the final point before the Eagles had to rotate a defensive specialist into the front row.
The Mighty Macs served first in the third set. Pringle and Golia combined on a block for a 1-0 lead. Immaculata did not serve again until it was 18-1.
Viviana Fragoso served 17-straight points to start the frame. Immaculata scratched back a few points but the Eagles won the final set 25-10 Shreiber had four kills and two blocks in the last set.
In the two matches, Faber eight total blocks and Scheiber had seven. Furey had 38 assists and Rogers added 26. Fragoso had 39 total digs.
"We have been working on things, and we are starting to see them happening," Head Coach
Mark Birtwistle said of his young team. "Veronica [Faber] and Maddie [Golia] both hit .400 in the second match and our blocking is getting better. On the day, we did a nice job of serving aggressively without errors."
The Eagles had 25 aces and seven errors in the two wins.
Eastern will host Albright on Tuesday evening.
