Women's Soccer Draws with PSU Harrisburg

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – On a rainy afternoon at Olson Field, Eastern Women's Soccer showed grit and resilience, battling through relentless pressure to earn a 1-1 draw against Penn State Harrisburg and extend their unbeaten streak to eight matches.

Senior Megan Burkholder delivered the equalizer with her first career goal, making the most of Eastern's second — and final — shot of the day. The late first-half strike came off a high arching pass from first-year midfielder Meiley Shuck, who notched her first collegiate assist after scoring twice over the weekend.

After having all kinds of space and time against Goucher over the weekend, the dribbling, passing, and shooting lanes were not as ample against Harrisburg. The Lions (3-4-2) controlled both possession and field position throughout the contest, particularly in the first half. Harrisburg struck first in the 37th minute off a free kick from midfield. The restart from Katie Brown found Katelyn Monette in front of the goal, and the senior capitalized to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

With Eastern trailing for the first time all season and the clock winding down in the second half, Shuck picked up the ball in the defensive half and lifted a pass over and through the Lions' back line. Burkholder, racing in from the left, settled just outside the box and fired a high shot past the keeper to bring the Eagles level.

The Lions continued to apply pressure, but the Eagles, and Faith Leake, kept Harrisburg off the scoreboard the rest of the way despite several excellent scoring chances. Leake made two saves on 14 total shots in the draw.

Eastern Head Coach Jess Shanahan was proud of how her team responded, and was particularly pleased with how her midfield and back line defended against a relentless attack.

"PSU Harrisburg is such a quality team, and they move the ball incredibly well," Shanahan said. "Despite being on the back-foot for most of the match, our coaching staff is inspired by the mental toughness of our group. They have a no-quit attitude, and found a way to equalize with a great shot from Megan. Paige Snell, Emma Bennett, and Tia Argento played incredibly well."

Eastern (6-0-2) will begin a tough slate of matches starting this weekend at Arcadia. The match is set to begin at 3:00 pm.
