ST. DAVIDS, Pa.— In the team's home-opener, Eastern University Women's Volleyball (6-1) saw its unbeaten streak to start the season snapped at six as the visiting Stockton University Ospreys (4-3) engineered a reverse-sweep to claim the five-set win.
Hannah Pringle had 17 kills and
Alexis Standford had 14.
The Eagles won the opening two sets in fairly comfortable fashion, but their guests grabbed momentum in the match in the second half of a tightly-contested third set. With the score tied at 13, the Ospreys scored six of the next seven points to seize control of the set. Jalynn Grant sparked the rally with a kill and a solo block. The two teams traded points to the end, but the Eagles were unable to make up ground and fell 25-21. The loss was the first set Eastern ahs dropped this fall.
The fourth set started poorly and never really got better.
Viviana Fragoso had a three-point run in the middle of the set, but that only closed the gap to 17-12. The Stockton setters had all their hitters at their disposal and the Ospreys hit .313 with 14 kills.
After scoring the first two points of the fifth set, the Eagles struggled to find their rhythm at the service line. Eastern held a 5-4 edge, but a four-point Stockton run in the short set swung the edge toward the guests. The Eagles fell 15-8.
In the opening set, Eastern jumped to a 9-3 edge in the first and led 23-12 on the way to a 25-18 win. The late push from Stockton evened things up statistically, but the Eastern offense looked dynamic with both Standford and Pringle hitting well. The Eagles hit .286 with 15 kills. In the second set, Eastern had 13 kills against only two errors and hit .306 on the way to a 25-16 win.
The Eagles are back on the road next week with a Tuesday match at Haverford College and three matches at the University of Scranton.
