ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Lacrosse scored the first nine goals of the game and held on for a 12-5 MAC Commonwealth win over the visiting Golden Wolves of Alvernia University.
Christopher Fanelli and
Brett Gougler each scored three times and
Nick Litzenberger had two goals and four assists as the Eagles (6-8, 2-2) leveled their record in league play.
Though the Eagles dominated possession early and had a 15-2 edge in first-quarter shots, their lead was only 5-0 after one quarter. Alvernia goalie Dane Sabarese made eight of his 22 saves in the first quarter.
The Eagles grabbed the lead on the opening possession off a Sabarese save. Gougler grabbed a rebound on the edge of the crease and dunked it home for an early lead. Three minutes later,
Christopher Fanelli finished a nice feed from his brother Frankie for a 2-0 lead. Gougler,
Christopher Fanelli, and Litzenberger each added goals before the game was ten minutes old.
Eastern's sixth goal did not come for nearly another nine minutes of game clock. Litzenberger set up
Brett Williamson on the crease with 11:12 remaining int he half. On the next possession, Ryan WIlliamson set up Litzenberger for his team-leading 36th goal of the year. Midway through the second, Gougler finished his hat trick.
Despite dominating possession, the Eagles did not score in the final seven minutes of the half.
Two minutes into the second half,
Frankie Fanelli slammed home his 19th of the year on a feed from Gougler.
The Golden Wolves (6-7, 0-4) scored in a settled situation and then doubled their total with a ninety-yard strike against a ten-man ride. Eastern scored the final goal of the third on an extra-man tally from
Christopher Fanelli. Litzenberger provided the assist on Fanelli's 11th extra-man goal of the campaign. It his 35th career extra-man tally.
The Golden Wolves scored three goals in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter before
Brett Williamson scored from Litzenberger to restore a six-goal edge.
Nicholas Howes scored his first career goal for the final score of the game.
Bejamin Souder won 10-of-15 faceoffs and the Eagles had a 42-27 edge in ground balls.
Zachary Klym did not allow a goal in 34 minutes to pick up the win.
The Eagles are at Albright on Friday afternoon.
