HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – With a pair of dominant wins at Centenary University, Eastern University Flag Football locked up a spot in the upcoming Atlantic East Tournament. The Eagles beat the Neumann University Knights 35-6 in their first game and completed the sweep with a 28-0 win over the host Cyclones.
Kira Green threw for 299 yards and five touchdowns in the two wins.
The Eagles (10-3, 7-3) have won seven of their last games in the league and 10-of-11 overall.
In the win over Neumann, the Eagles took advantage of some short fields and early turnovers to build a 21-0 lead.
Kyla Massenburg scored the first touchdown of the game on a five yard run.
Jeriyah Johnson caught a pass from Green to double the lead before the start of the second quarter. Green connected with Massenburg on a 14-yard score for a 21-0 halftime lead.
Damiyae Moyet — a big play threat all season— caught a 66-yard pass from Green on the opening play of the second half to blow the game open. That pass becomes the longest play from scrimmage for the program. Green scored ona. short run late in the quarter for a 35-0 lead. The Knights scored in the waning moments of the game to avert the shutout. The Eagles needed stops on pair of extra points to earn a 14-12 win over Neumann in the first meeting between the two teams.
Against the hosts, Massenburg ran for 70 yards and Green threw for 141 yards, but it was the Eastern defense that started the action.
Stephanie White returned an interception for 61 yards to put the Eagles up. Johnson ran the conversion to make the Eastern lead 7-0.
Massenburg doubled the Eastern lead with a 19-yard run in the second quarter, and Moyet caught two touchdowns in the third quarter. Moyet finished the afternoon with three touchdowns and 185 yards.
Agaisnt Centenary, Massenburg and White each had eight tackles and
Dominique Geiger and Johnson each had six.
Trinity Upton had an interception.
The Eagles will host Kean in a non-league game tomorrow afternoon before finishing up the league schedule with home games against Immaculata and Holy Family. Immaculata beat the Eagles 20-7 on the first day of the season. The Mighty Macs are currently 5-5 in the league and in the fourth spot.
With one more win, Marymount will wrap up the top seed and hosting responsibilities for the Atlantic East Tourney.
