OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Returning to conference play on Saturday, Eastern Men's Tennis saw its three-match win streak snapped with a 5-2 loss to the Stevenson Mustangs.
Jared Groff won his third match of the year at No. 5 singles and
Fredy Rodriguez claimed his third straight win at No. 6 singles, but Stevenson won at the first four single spots while also securing the doubles point.
Jeremy Brown and Groff played a competitive match at No. 2 doubles, forcing a tiebreaker with Stevenson's Dominic Duncan and Garrett Warren. However, the Stevenson pulled it out in the tiebreaker, winning 7-2 to clinch the doubles point.
At No. 4 singles,
Ethan Goonewardene played Duncan to a third-set tiebreaker. After a 6-4, 2-6 score in the first sets, Duncan again pulled it out in the tiebreaker round, beating Goonewardene 10-8. Jeff Day fell at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-1,
Peter Folga lost at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-4, and
Jeremy Brown came up short, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
Groff, who joined the team this spring, continued to be lights out for Eastern. The first-year won his third singles match in four appearances, beating Nate Kelly in a tiebreaker 3-6, 6-2, 10-8. Rodriguez improved to 3-0 in his last three appearances, coming away with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-6 victory at No. 6 singles.
Eastern is back in action on Tuesday at Neumann. First serve is set for 3:30 pm.
