Women's Lacrosse Earns Home Win over Notre Dame

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - In its home opener on Wednesday afternoon, Eastern Women's Lacrosse had six different goal scorers in a 20-3 win over the Notre Dame of Maryland Gators at Olson Field. The Eagles scored 17 goals in the opening two quarters and played with a running clock for most of the second quarter and second half.

First-year midfielder Natalia Willoughby led the Eagles with five goals, while fellow first-year CJ Summa found the back of the net four times. Sophomore Morgan Wallace and junior Ava Weiman each finished with three goals and three assists. Junior Gracie Horton also recorded a hat trick, while first-year Amira Solomon scored the other two goals for the Eagles. First-year goalkeeper Natasha Chaillou earned her first win in the crease, making one save.

Willoughby got the scoring started at the 11:49 mark of the first quarter, before the Eagles scored a pair of man down goals to grab a three-goal advantage. Summa scored her first of the day at the 9:14 mark, and Willoughby scored less than a minute later.

Notre Dame's Emily Nunez, who scored all three of the Gators' goals, put the visitors on the board at the 5:06 mark with a man-up goal, but the Eagles responded with four straight from Wallace, Weiman, Summa, and Solomon to take a 7-1 lead into the second quarter.

Eastern's offense continued to hum in the second quarter as the team scored 10 more goals to take a 17-3 lead into halftime. Horton scored the first two of the period, and both Summa and Willoughy potted a pair in the second frame.

Armed with a double-digit lead at the 8:41 mark, the clock ran for the rest of the contest. Willoughby, Weiman, and Wallace all scored after halftime to help secure the 17-goal win for the Eagles.

The Eagles also excelled in draw control and on defense. Eastern finished the contest with 19 draw controls, which included eight for Willoughby and five each for Wallace and Horton, while the Eagles' defense caused 12 turnovers. Willoughby again led the Eagles in that category, recording four caused turnovers along with seven ground balls, while Solomon, Laynie Casey, Addyson Whitaker, each recorded two caused turnovers. Horton also finished the game with four ground balls.

Eastern Women's Lacrosse (1-1) is back in action next Wednesday at Gwynedd Mercy. The contest is set to begin at 4:00 pm.
