ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern Men's Volleyball (10-5) topped Virginia Wesleyan in three sets and Immaculata in four to sweep through the weekend.
Connor Tucholski finished the day with 23 kills and four blocks while hitting over .370 for the day.
The Eagles trailed early in each of the first two sets against Virginia Wesleyan (8-3). Down 10-4 in the first, the Eagles did not take the lead until a
Kaodi Wokocha ace made it 25-24. Tucholski and
Max Bagileo combined on a block for set point to help the Eagles steal the opening set, 26-24. Wokocha had five kills and an ace in the frame, and the Eagles hit a solid .261.
The Eagles trailed 11-4 in the second set before a kill for a sideout from
Colby Arvesen. Symir Bird (Go Birds!) served a pair of aces in a three-point run to close the gap. After a quick sideout,
Kadin Kolstad came on to serve. Kolstad started his run of six points with an ace and forced the Marlins into calling a timeout and making two substitutions. Even after a service error ended his run, the Eagles led 15-13.
The Marlins tied the score at 16 before the Eagles grabbed the lead with a sideout and another Wokocha ace. Eastern scored only one more point on serve, a dunk from Bagileo after an overpass of another Kolstad effort, but they were efficient in their passing and won 25-21. Tucholski had three kills in the second set.
The third set had an incredible sequence of blocks early on. With the score tied at five and Bagileo serving, the Eagles scored six-straight points on blocks. Tucholski had the first one and then
Josiah Cash was involved in the next five. Byrd got three assists and Tucholski got two.
Up 14-5, the Eagles had control of the set. The Marlins, however, had an eye toward a comeback. They closed the gap to 14-10 before Tucholski stopped the run with a strong kill in transition. The Eagles were able to sideout well enough to secure the win.
"That was a good win for us," Head Coach
Harry Bitzberger said after the match. "We needed to work on closing out matches against good teams. We passed well enough to do it. Our serving and blocking were solid as well."
Wokocha led a balanced attack with eight kills.
Josh Hrabosky and
Ronan Landis each finished with 14 assists.
The Eagles played with some different line-ups against Immaculata. Byrd recorded 11 digs while playing libero and the Mighty Macs had no answer for the Eastern attack in the first two sets. The Eagles hit .400 in winning the opener 25-22, and hit .500 in taking the second set 25-15.
The Mighty Macs hit an impressive .353 to win the third set 25-22 before the Eagles closed out the match with a 25-21 win in the fourth. Eastern led 19-13 and held off a late Immaculata charge to win.
Eastern is slated to host Gallaudet University on Wednesday evening before starting the league season at Messiah next Saturday.
