LANCASTER, Pa.— Eastern University Women's Basketball ran out to a 38-23 halftime lead and never looked back on the way to a 69-46 season-opening win at Lancaster Bible College. First-year guard
Adriana Summersett delivered 19 points, nine rebounds, and three assists in her collegiate debut.
The Eagles (1-0) made 8-of-18 and grabbed five offensive rebounds in racing out to a 23-13 lead after one quarter.
Jeriyah Johnson scored 11 points and added two assists as the Eagles had three different players hit from deep.
Kayla Martinez and
Ariyana Hester both connected from deep on their only shots of the quarter. Johnson made three free throws before finding Hester for a long-range effort to build a 6-0 lead.
After the teams traded baskets to start the second, Eastern made three-straight from deep. Summersett hit the first two and Martinez connected to go up 34-15.
After building the lead to 55-29 after three quarters, the Eagles played 13 players in the fourth.
Emily Brownell hit from deep to become the fifth Eastern player to make a 3-pointer in the game.
Johnson finished with 17 points and four assists and
Tychelle Gordon had seven points and seven rebounds off the bench. The Eagles won the rebounding battle 42-28.
"I'm very happy to start the season with a win," Head Coach
Sarah Fowler said after the game. "I am even more pleased with the energy and heart our team showed. With a younger team, I'm very happy to see them step up at the collegiate level."
The Eagles are at Penn State Berks on Wednesday.
