ST. DAVIDS, Pa.— On a night when Eastern University Women's Volleyball honored the program's two seniors, the Eagles earned a three-set win over the visiting York College Spartans to secure the top spot in next week's MAC Commonwealth Tournament.
The program honored
Hannah Pringle and
Viviana Fragoso before the match. Pringle, a four-year starter as an outside hitter, is closing in on 1500 kills for her career. With her10 kills tonight, she is only 10 kills behind Lisa Sondej '98 for the fourth spot on Eastern's career kill list. Fragoso played as a defensive specialist for her first three seasons before donning the libero jersey for her senior year. She is over 1100 digs for her career and has played an integral role in Eastern's success serving and receiving serve.
The Eagles (20-6, 6-1) put themselves into the spot where tonight's result would matter with five-consecutive wins in the league. The Eagles dropped their MAC Commonwealth opener at Widener. Over the past two weeks, Eastern beat Messiah and Stevenson on the road.
At home tonight for only the sixth time all year, the Eagles fell behind early but jumped to an 11-8 lead with
Sarah Furey at the service line. The first-year setter served four-straight points for an 11-8 lead. After the teams traded sideouts, Fragoso gave the Eagles a big cushion with a six-point run. She delivered a pair of aces in the burst which gave the Eagles a 19-11 lead. The Spartans (9-16, 2-5) pulled within five at 21-16 before
Josie Arezina delivered a big kill to stop the York run.
Alexis Standford put away the final two balls of the set to give Eastern a 25-18 win.
Standford had four of her ten kills in the first set.
The Eagles won the second set 25-16despite hitting only .205 as a team. Pringle and Standford each had five kills in the second set.
Grace Cooper picked up five digs.
Eastern's setters worked to get all six hitters involved in the third. Jessie Schrieber delivered three kills on six swings to lead the Eagles on the way to a 25-14 win in the third. She finished the match with six kills.
Veronica Faber led the Eagles with four blocks.
"We are so grateful for the impact Hannah and Viv have had on our program," Head Coach
Mark Birtwistle said after the match. "After we lost a really big class, they both stepped into leadership roles. They are not only having their best seasons, they have led our young team well."
Eastern has not lost multiple regular-season conference games since 1993. The Eagles will host a Hood team that emerged from a win-and-you're-in match-up tonight over Widener with a stunning reverse sweep. The Blazers (8-19, 4-3) have never played in a MAC Volleyball Tournament. Stevenson will host Messiah in the other semifinal.
Eastern won at Hood on Oct. 14. The Eagles will host the Blazers at 7 pm on Nov. 12.
