Volleyball Falls to #25 CNU Captains

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— To start the team's final regular-season weekend, Eastern University Women's Volleyball dropped a three-set decision at Christopher Newport University. The No. 25 Captains (20-7) hit .385. Veronica Faber had five kills, four aces and three blocks to lead the Eagles.

Eastern (20-7) jumped to 9-6 lead early, but the host Captains found their offensive rhythm and flipped the score with a six-point run. Hannah Pringle finished the first set with six kills. The Captains, however, had too much firepower and hit .355 on the way to a 25-15 win.

An injury at the end of the first set had the Eagles switching the line-up for the final two sets. After setting in the opening set, Sarah Fury moved outside. Alexis Standford moved to the middle. In the second set, Standford converted both her attempts into kills and Furey delivered three kills on eight attempts. CNU picked up the Eastern attack with 19 digs and held the Eagles to a .114 hitting percentage on the way to a 25-20 win. Faber had three aces in the set.

Faber had four kills in four chances and a pair of blocks in the third set, but the Captains neutralized the rest of the Eastern Attack and hit .441 in the third to win 25-16.

Kallie Rogers had 17 assists, and Emma Ciesielka had a team-high nine digs.

"CNU has always been a quality team and well coached." Head Coach Mark Birtwistle said after the game. "They do things that require discipline and sustained focus. We are hoping to bounce back tomorrow and finish the regular season with good energy."

The Eagles will play Centre and Roanoke tomorrow. Eastern Women's Volleyball has never played Roanoke, and the team's only match with Centre was a five-set loss on the opening weekend of the 2007 season.

Eastern will host Hood College in the opening round of the MAC Commonwealth tournament on Wednesday.
