ASTON, Pa. – Eastern University Men's Soccer scored first, but the Eagles could not make that goal stand in a 3-1 loss at Neumann University. After
Ethan Pfau opened the scoring in the 17th minute, the host Knights equalized in the 27th minute and grabbed the lead just before the hour mark of the contest.
The Eagles came into the contest on the heels of a strong opening effort in a 2-1 win over Ithaca College. They seemed to be riding that momentum early. On a run out of the middle, Pfau beat a Neumann defender to a long through ball from
Francisco Fiol. Pfau's first touch put him into the middle of the box, and his second touch put the Eagles up.
The Knights equalized in the 27th minute. The goal came against the run of play, but was well earned. The Knights strung together a great combination of passes on the left side.
Ty Bleiler made a primary save on a shot from Nick LoBiondo. The Eagles blocked a second shot, but Neumann forward Jake Kuzmick won the race to rebound to level the score. Bleiler, who collided with LoBiondo on the play had to leave the match.
LoBiondo, a Cabrini transfer, scored what became the game winner on a bit of flukey play near the hour mark. The Neumann forward drove down the right flank and ripped a cross toward goal from 15 yards wide of the frame. An attempted block at the six-yard box redirected the goal into the top of the goal. The Knights added an insurance goal on a corner kick goal in the 84th minute. Kuzmick put away his 22nd career goal on the play.
While Neumann came into the match without a win, the Knights advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year and pushed the second-ranked University of Mary Washington Eagles to overtime in the opening round. Eastern and Neumann tied last fall.
The Eagles are at Haverford College for a noon game on Saturday.
