IMMACULATA- Pa.–
CJ Summa scored a late equalizer and ended the game with a penalty corner goal in overtime to lift Eastern University Field Hockey (1-1) to a 4-3 non-league win over the host Immaculata University Mighty Macs (1-1).
Jenna Reider and
JoEl Groff also scored as the Eagles secured their first win of the season.
Less than three minutes into the extra period, Summa gave the Eagles their only lead of the game with a rocket to the lower left corner of the goal.
Morgan Unruh picked up the assist with a flawless insert on the play. Summa becomes the first Eastern University player to score in each of her first two games since Yvonne Herbster scored in three-straight to open her All-America career in 2008.
The Mighty Macs took the first of three leads with a goal in the 13th minute.
Though the Eagles controlled play with a 7-2 edge in shots in the second quarter, they were not able to equalize until Groff volleyed home a rebound her first of the year in the 37th minute. The tally was her third in four career matches against the Mighty Macs.
Immaculata opened the scoring in a wild fourth quarter on a beautiful redirection of high shot from the right side. Two minutes later, the Eagles drew level again.
Jenna Reider tapped home a central touch from Carlee Howard at almost the exact midpoint of the period. The game, however, did not stay tied for long. Less than a minute later, the hosts tucked home another rebound effort for their third and final one-goal lead.
Only seconds later the Mighty Macs averted danger when Summa had a drive slip just wide on a corner play. On the next chance, the same play worked. The rookie from Ellicott City, Md. took an insert from Abbey Hakes and skidded a low blast through traffic for her second tally of the season.
Both teams had chances late. The Eagles had three penalty corner chances in the final three minutes. The Mighty Macs blocked three shots and got a save from their goalie to keep the Eagles from taking the lead on the first two. The Eastern defense fought off a single Immaculata penalty corner before earning a final penalty corner with one second on the clock. Summa's shot was deflected and the Macs cleared the ball to force overtime.
In the ten -minute overtime, both teams play with only six field players. With the teams so short-handed, fitness and execution on set plays take on great importance. Several good plays at midfield enabled the Eagles to keep pressure on the Immaculata defense. Less than three minutes into the period Neveah Greene made a steal and found Summa up field. After beating one defender, Summa found Howard in space and the sophomore earned the circle from the left side to secure the decisive penalty corner call with a strong drive toward goal.
The Eagles will host Lebanon Valley College on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
