ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey scored twice in the opening five minutes and with a steady mist falling throughout poured in four more goals for a 6-0 non-league win over the visiting Delaware Valley University Aggies. Six different Eastern players scored in the win.
Counting the final 35 minutes of a tough 2-1 loss to a nationally-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology side last weekend, the Eastern defense has now gone 155 minutes without surrendering a goal. The visiting Aggies had only two shots on
Angelina Catania in the first half, but the first-year goalie was up to the task on both.
Christina Unger made four stops in the second half, but the best save of the half came on a penalty corner situation in the 34th minute. Aggie midfielder Kaylee Hartung beat Unger with a redirection from close range, but
Paige Brouse swept in from the right side of the cage to pick up her third defensive save in the last three matches.
At the other end, the Eagles were efficient. Less than two minutes in, the Eagles scored on their first shot at goal. After an Aggie foul on the perimeter,
Karlee Howard swept away from goal and earned the circle with a run up the right side,
CJ Summa met Howard's cross and tapped home her team-best 11th goal of the year. With the shutout, the tally stood as Summa's fourth game winning goal for the 4-4 Eagles.
Moments later, Howard doubled the lead with weaving run in from the right side. The sophomore picked up her fourth of the year with a reverse-stick effort from nine yards out.
Kacie Agnew made it 3-0 with a rebound effort off her own shot late in the period. After controlling play without a goal for much of the second period, the Eagles broke through for a fourth with less than a minute to play before the half.
The Eagles scored their four first-half goals despite getting only a single penalty corner.
Shortly after half, Howard set up
Morgan Unruh with a centering pass. Unruh matched Howard with a second-great reverse-stick effort. Three minutes later,
Jenna Reider tapped home a loose ball for the final score of the match.
For the Eagles, the win is the eighth-straight over their former MAC Freedom rivals. The Eagles will play a less familiar foe next Wednesday when they travel to Mahwah, N.J. for the program's first meeting with the Ramapo College Roadrunners. That game is slated for a 6 pm start.
