ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey scored four goals in each of the first two quarters on the way to a 9-0 win over the visiting Chargers of Lancaster Bible College. Seven different Eastern players scored goals and two more added assists as the Eagles posted their biggest scoring day since beating Gwynedd Mercy College by the same score in Sept. 2008.
The Eagles (3-4) came into the contest having scored in every game and with some big point totals. The Eagles had a 5-4, a 5-4 loss and a 7-3 loss on their record already, so when they jumped out to an early lead, the instinct to add more was strong.
CJ Summa scored her tenth of the year on a penalty corner to start the scoring.
Karlee Howard doubled the lead two minutes later.
Kacie Agnew put away a rebound effort 30 seconds after that and
Emma Kircher scored her first of the year on an assist from Agnew with a little over four minutes to play in the first period. The four Eastern goals in the opening frame came on only eight total shots.
The Eagles were just as efficient in the second. Howard set up the opening goal of the quarter with a dribbling run from the right side and a pass to
Kara Frantz at the penalty stripe. . Frantz swept in her shot for a 5-0 lead only 46 seconds into the period. Two minutes later, Howard then put away her second of the day with a reverse stick effort from the top of the circle.
As the Eastern coaches started to move people around. The Eagles added two goals in quick succession in the latter half of the period.
JoEl Groff tipped in a hard
Jenna Reider cross. Twenty seconds later Groff found
Morgan Unruh for a transition goal.
The Eagles worked to connect on possession out of the back row and did not attempt a shot in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Kircher was looking to connect with a player on the back post, but her strong pass kicked off a defensive foot and into the goal for the final tally.
The Eagles scored their goals on twenty total shots.
Christina Unger played the final three quarters in goal and made Eastern's only save of the game.
Eastern will host Delaware Valley University on Saturday at 11 am.
