BALTIMORE– Eastern University Women's Soccer scored three first-half goals and
Brooke Moskey made five saves in goals as the Eagles earned a 3-0 win over the host Goucher College Gophers.
Billinda Leisner,
Mia Zucker, and
Ashlynn Keys each scored for the Eagles.
Leisner opened the scoring int he second minute. The rookie midfielder made a nice run onto a perfectly weighted through ball from
Ashlynn Keys. After receiving the ball on the eft side, Leisner took a touch central and rolled a shot into the far corner for the early lead.
Eight minutes later,
Olivia Nicholson came within a few inches of doubling the Eastern lead. Her 30-yard free kick hit the crossbar and went out of play.
Though the Gophers applied some pressure and had a pair of corner kicks and three shots, Moskey made a save, and the Eastern defense was able to clear its zone.
Zucker made it 2-0 on a broken play at the midpoint of the first. After a defender bumped a ball free on a long throw, Zucker lifted a tough-angle shot over the Goucher goalkeeper and inside the far post.
Keys finished the scoring in the 35th minute on a play that looked nearly identical to the first goal of the match.
Emma Bennett played the provider on the third goal. The junior midfielder beat her mark near midfield and split the Goucher back row with a flawless pass toward the edge of the box. Keys took one central touch and curled a shot into the back post for her second goal of the season.
The Eagles rotated through players in the second-half heat and maintained pressure on the Goucher goal. Though Eastern had a 12-6 edge in shots, Moskey had to make four more stops to keep a clean sheet.
I am proud of the ladies for putting the full 90 together today and staying locked in," Head Coach
Jess Shanahan said after the match. " We had lots of rotations for many players all over the field. It was nice to see them carry the tempo and level of the game. We challenged them at halftime to earn the shutout, and take pride in a complete performance."
The Eagles (4-0-2) look to keep their unbeaten start going when they host Lebanon Valley College at 3:30 on Wednesday. Eastern tied the game at LVC last year, but have not beaten their former MAC Commonwealth foes since 2012.
