Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Tops Immaculata

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer overcame an early deficit to claim a 3-1 win over the visiting Immacualta University Mighty Macs. Ella Marrollo, Nicole Eveland, and Nora Pederson each scored goals for the Eagles.

The Mighty Macs (2-3) opened the scoring with a corner kick goal in the 11th minute minute. Sam Terry, who served the ball, and Gabby Paladino, who headed it home, each played for Cabrini last season. Six minutes later, Marrollo kept the theme going when she buried a Mia Zucker cross for her second goal of the season.

The Eagles (3-0-2) continued to apply pressure, but they did not break through until Olivia Nicholson slipped a lengthy through ball in behind the Mighty Mac defense for Eveland. The junior defender won the race for the well-weighted pass and buried a shot from the right side for her first career goal. Thought eh Eagles held a 13-4 edge in first-half shots, their lead stayed at 2-1 until the 89th minute.

Immaculata goalie Emily Guthier made nine of her thirteen saves in the first half, but was active in cutting away crosses and quick off her line behind a high back line to keep the visitors in range until nearly the end. The Eagles had a goal disallowed when Kelly Lyons slipped a step ahead of the ball before the pass from Leah Fowler on a break-away attempt, and Emma Bennett hit a the inside of the back post on another great chance. The Eagles earned five corner kicks after the intermission.

Pederson added the insurance goal late. Marrollo created the chance with some tremendous work on the left flank. After an Immaculata defender beat her the ball, the graduate forward persisted and popped a ball free. She won the battle for the loose ball and found an Pederson less than ten yards from goal. Pederson, who had only been on for a few minutes, put good contact on the shot for her first career goal.

"We started a bit slowly," Head Coach Jess Shanahan said after the match."We began to generate some through balls  and decent services into the box as we found a rhythm. We love seeing new players get on the scoreboard, and that we're not relying on one person to do the job — great to see the team effort.  We want to carry this momentum into the matches ahead, while continuing to iron out some small things and improve."

The win is Eastern's 13th in 13 matches between the two Main Line programs.

This weekend, the Eagles will travel to Baltimore for a 1:00 pm game at Goucher College. The Gophers claimed a 1-0 win the last time the two programs met.
