ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Down 4-1 in the match, Eastern University Men's Tennis claimed the last four decisions to earn a 5-4 MAC Commonwealth win over the visiting Alvernia University Golden Wolves. Sophomore Jeffrey Day secured the win with a marathon win at second singles.
Though Day and his opponent were on the courts with the first group to play singles, the duo were the final match to finish. After Day took the opening set with a 7-5 tiebreaker, his opponent earned an early break and won the second set 6-3. After many long rallies, Day grabbed the win with a 6-4 finish.
Day's heroics would have been for naught if it had not been for positive results in three more singles matches. The Eagles dropped two of three doubles matches and lost at first singles and fourth singles. Peter Folga earned Eastern's first singles point with a three-set win at third singles. Ethan Goonewardene won his second-straight singles match with a 6-2, 6-3 decision. As he earned the Eastern doubles point with Jacob Craig, Goonewardene was the only double-winner of the day for the Eagles.
Shane Witzer claimed a 6-3,6-1 win at sixth singles to tie the match and give Day the chance to close.
The win is the first win over Alvernia since the Eagles joined the MAC Commonwealth.
The Eagles are at Hood College for another league match on Saturday.
