ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning of game two, the combination of sophomore first baseman
Luke Meehan, first-year pitcher
Dylan Labukas, and senior center fielder
Connor Schilling led Eastern Baseball to a comeback, 4-3, conference series clinching win over the York Spartans on Friday afternoon at The Yard. After winning just five conference games a season ago, the Eagles are now 4-2 in conference play with series wins over the Spartans and the Widener Pride.
Meehan, who transferred in from Arcadia, was brilliant at the dish all afternoon long, hitting a pair of home runs in game two, including the game-tying, two-run shot to left-center field in Eastern's three-run sixth frame. In the two games, Meehan finished with two home runs, three singles, and five runs batted in.
Labukas (2-1), who entered the game in the fifth inning, was equally as brilliant in relief. In the fifth appearance of his rookie campaign, the Scranton native allowed just three hits and four total baserunners in three innings, finishing with five strikeouts, two flyouts, and two groundouts in his second win of the season.
Schilling, who was 0-for-5 coming into his final at-bat of the day, recorded the biggest hit of the afternoon in the game's most crucial moment. The West Chester native scorched the first pitch he saw through the right side of the York infield, scoring
Griffin Falco for the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth frame.
York struck first in the opening frame on an Andrew Santarpia double to left field, but Meehan punched back in the second inning with a solo shot to left field, cutting the Spartans' advantage to 2-1. York's Chris Betler, the reigning D3 Player of the Week, hit a solo shot of his own in the fourth to put the Spartans back ahead by two, setting the stage for another dramatic Eastern comeback.
Garrett Friend began the rally with a one-out single, and on a 3-1 count, Meehan crushed a fastball over the left-center field wall to tie the contest at 3-3. Falco kept the rally going with a single to left center field, and eventually advanced to third on a wild pitch and a groundout. Schilling completed the comeback with his RBI single, putting the Eagles ahead 4-3.
Labukas closed it out, working his way around a walk and an infield error to secure Eastern's fourth conference win, and second conference series, of the season.
In game one, Eastern battled back from 1-0 and 4-1 deficits to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Eagles recorded four hits, singles from
Evan Barks,
Justin DiCesare, Friend, and Meehan, to knot it up at four. However, York scored the game-winning run in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch. The Eagles had their chances, but struggled with runners in scoring position, leaving nine runners on base.
Barks finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored in the opener, while Meehan finished 3-for-4 with two RBI singles. Friend went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while DiCesare added a hit and a run batted in.
Eastern (10-8, 4-2) returns to action on Tuesday for a non-conference contest against Rosemont. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
