Women's Lacrosse Wins at Gwynedd Mercy

LOWER GWYNEDD, Pa. – In a rare Monday night game, Eastern University Women's Lacrosse scored the first six goals of the second half and held on for a 16-14 win over the host Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins. Six different Eagles scored goals as the Eagles picked up their first win of the year.

"This was a total team win," Head Coach Mikala Gillespie said after the game. "Every player did her job in helping us to win. This group totally earned it. I am very proud of them."

Down 8-7 at halftime, the Eagles put together their best offensive scoring stretch of the season to start the second half. Gracie Horton tied the game with a transition goal less than two minutes into the half. Fifty second later, Morgan Wallace scored her third of four goals on the day to put the Eagles up.

Horton then set up goals by Ava Weiman and Reese Devlin. Weiman's goal was her third of the day. Devlin's goal came on a cut from the left side of the fan. She beat a pair of defenders to Horton's pass and ripped home her first career goal. As it turned out, the first player on hand to congratulate Devlin was Emily Stiles. Less than three minutes later, Devlin doubled her career total with a quick-stick effort from the edge of the crease on a pass from Emerson Shauger.

Shauger completed the run with a free position goal with three minutes left in the quarter. The two sides traded goals with Teresa Gailey taking advantage of a draw control win to answer nearly immediately. The Eagles won the draw after Gailey's goal, but the Griffins forced a turnover and scored with 47 seconds left. After the hosts won the next draw, Marcianna Tavani made a big stop on a low shot, but the GMU ride forced and Eastern turnover and the hosts tallied with four second left to close the Easter lead to 14-11 with one quarter left.

The Griffins scored the first goal of the fourth and had another shot to take the lead. Tavani made a save and then picked off a pass to help keep the Eagles up two goals. After a good outlet pass, the Eagles extended their possession. Wallace scored her fourth goal of the game to restore a three-goal edge with one second left on the possession clock.

The Griffins again answered and cut the Eastern lead back to two and had possession with a chance to pull within one. The Eastern defense stood strong and Tavani eventually won a race to back up a missed shot.

Shauger scored Eastern's final goal, her third of the day, with seven minutes left. The Griffins scored with 3:45 left and had a player advantage for a full two minutes, but Tavani and the Eastern defense stood strong to hold the lead. Tavani finished the game with nine saves. Camila Sosa led the Eastern defense with three caused turnovers.

Gailey, Shauger, and Wallace combined to win 17 of the 33 draws in the match.

The Eagles will host the Neumann University Knights on Wednesday.
