Men's Volleyball Grabs MAC Win Against King's

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Eastern University Men's Volleyball won the final three sets to earn a hard-fought Middle Atlantic Conference win over the visiting King's College Monarchs. The Eagles (6-7, 1-1) had four players reach double-figures in kills and hit .328 on the way to a four-set win. Chris Miller and Josh Hrabosky split setting duties and dished out 59 assists.

The Eagles saw two set points go unfinished and fell, 29-27, in the opening set and trailed 12-8 in the second set. Senior outside hitter Lucas Adam buried a kill for a sideout and served the Eagles to a 14-13 lead. That run gave the Eagles a chance to grind out a 25-21 second-set win with just two points on serve. The Monarchs scored only two points on serve in the second half of the set. Adam, Jarred Barch, and Rodney Quarles all had four kills in the critical second set.  In the frame, King's did not have an ace, and the Eagles were successful on 14-of-22 sideout chances.

After some shaky moments early, the Eastern passers had a good day. The Eagles were able to score on 67 of their 93  sideout chances (72%).  Max Bushong received 13 second-set serves without an error.

Eastern pulled away in the third set with Barch at the service line. Eastern's veteran middle hitter served three straight to put the home team up 15-12. For the match, Barch had eight kills on only 11 swings. The Eagles pulled away to a 25-20 win in the third.

Both teams traded sideouts for much of the fourth and King's led 19-18 late. With both teams passing well and earning sideout points, each team tried to ramp up the serving and the two teams combined for five consecutive service errors. Andres Suarez Batista came on to stop the run of miscues. In his first action of the match, Suarez Batista served for three straight points. The first came on an out-of-system hitting error, and the second came on a tremendous solo block from Josiah Cash. Quarles hammered home his 13th kill of the match for a 24-21 lead.

The Monarchs finally solved Suarez Batista with a sideout, but the Eagles answered right back to earn a 25-22 win in the set and secure their first MAC win of the year.

Max Bagileo hit .647 on the right side and finished with two blocks, and Symir Byrd 10 kills, nine digs, and an ace and was flawless in serve receive. Cash hit .385 with seven kills and Barch hit .636. Adam had ten kills and a pair of aces. The Monarchs (11-2, 0-2) had only two aces against 19 service errors.

The Eagles will join their classmates on Spring Break and will return to action on Tuesday March 5 at Kean.
