Women's Basketball Falls to Widener at Home

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - In the second meeting between the two teams this season, Eastern Women's Basketball, after an impressive win in Chester two weeks ago, fell to the Widener Pride 58-41 at The NEST on Wednesday night. Graduate forward Miranda Liebtag reached the 1,000 point mark, but the Eagles struggled on the offensive end, shooting just 26.7 percent from the field.

Liebtag led the Eagles with eight points to go along with six rebounds. A four-year starter at Cabrini and a two-team All-Atlantic East Second Team player, she reached the 1,000 point mark early in the fourth quarter on a shot from inside the arc off a steal from Jeriyah Johnson. Taryn Woodson, Wynter Bess, Johnson, and Camila Sosa each scored six, while Trinity Upton finished with five points and three rebounds off the bench. Woodson led the Eagles with eight boards, while Bess collected seven.

Woodson scored the game's first points to put the Eagles ahead early, but the Pride responded with eight straight points, four each from Mia Robbins and Jordan D'Ambrosio, to take a lead they would not relinquish. The Eagles were able to tie the contest at 8-8 on a pair of baskets from Liebtag and a jumper from Bess, but the Pride ended the first quarter on a 10-0 run to take an 18-8 lead into the first quarter break. Eastern shot just four-of-19 in the opening 10 minutes.

Eastern's defense stiffened in the first seven minutes of the second frame, holding the Pride scoreless. Meanwhile, the Eagles slowly cut into the Pride advantage. At the 3:44 mark, an Upton three made it 18-16, but that was as close as the Eagles would get. Widener outscored the Eagles 12-1 over the remainder of the half to take a 30-17 lead into halftime.

Widener (16-4, 6-3) pulled away in the third quarter, scoring 17 points and holding Eastern to just six to increase their lead to 47-24. The Eagles shot seven-of-12 in the fourth period, but would get any closer than 17.

Eastern (7-12, 3-6) will be back home on Saturday for an afternoon showdown with Stevenson. The contest is set to tip off at 1:00 pm.
