Strong Fourth Quarter Lifts Women's Basketball over Stevenson

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Eastern Women's Basketball overcame an early 10-point deficit and used a dominant fourth quarter to clinch a 62-52 win over the Stevenson Mustangs at The NEST on Saturday afternoon. Saturday's victory marked Eastern's fourth straight over their MAC Commonwealth rival and their second straight regular season sweep. Four Eagles finished in double figures, and Eastern scored 29 points in the final 8:37 to collect its eighth win of the season.

Fresh off scoring her 1,000th point on Wednesday, Miranda Liebtag recorded her second Eastern double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, which included two huge threes in the final frame. Camila Sosa put together a strong performance off the bench with 15 points,13 in the fourth quarter, to go along with three rebounds and four steals. Taryn Woodson recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds, while Jeriyah Johnson rounded out Eastern's double-digit scorers with 11 points.

Stevenson (5-16, 1-9) came out of the gate firing, storming out to a 10-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game and holding the Eagles off the scoreboard for nearly seven minutes. However, the Eagles answered right back with 12 straight points of their own. Woodson scored the first five points to cut the Mustangs lead to 10-5, and a Johnson three, a Woodson layup, and another Johnson basket put the Eagles ahead 12-10 with 52 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

From that moment until early in the fourth quarter, both team were locked into a dogfight. A pair of free throws from Sosa late in the second put the Eagles ahead by four, but the Mustangs answered with a basket in the final seconds to make it a 24-22 Eastern lead at the halftime break.

The third quarter was much of the same, as the Mustangs led between one and three points over the course of the frame. Early in the fourth quarter, Stevenson took their biggest lead since the opening period on a triple, going ahead 39-33 with 8:37 to play.

After that, the Eastern offense came alive. Sosa began the run with a triple to cut the Mustangs' lead to 39-36, before Woodson followed with a pair of free throws to make it 39-38. On the Eagles' next two possessions, Liebtag hit a corner three to put Eastern ahead for good, and Tyerra Jarvis followed with a tough layup in the paint to increase the Eagles' advantage to 43-39.

The Eagles' continued to add on to their lead throughout the quarter, and threes from Liebtag and Sosa in the final two minutes secured their fourth conference victory. After shooting just 12-for-39 in the first three quarters, Eastern shot a blistering nine-of-14 in the final 10 minutes.

"I'm very proud of the way we rallied together at the end of the game," Eastern Head Coach Sarah Fowler said. "Our fourth quarter overall was very strong - scoring 29 points in that quarter alone is something we earned and put the reps in for, and that gave us security at the end of the game. Miranda, Taryn, and Jeriyah led us well, and Camila showed up as a force to be reckoned with in the second half. We are still working on how to start games, but we are taking it one game at a time in our hopes of making playoffs."

Eastern will hit the road on Wednesday to conclude its season series with Alvernia. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
