Women's Basketball's Late Rally Falls Just Short in Loss at Alvernia

READING, Pa. - Trailing by as many as 19 points on Wednesday night at Jack McCloskey Court, Eastern Women's Basketball mounted a furious fourth quarter comeback, but ultimately fell to the Alvernia Golden Wolves 67-64. The Eagles had the game tied at 59-59 with 2:06 remaining and were within one in the final 12 seconds, but Alvernia's Jordan Karmonick hit six critical free throws down the stretch the secure the victory.

Sophomore guard Jeriyah Johnson played her best offensive game of the season, leading the Eagles with 22 points on a season-high eight made field goals and five makes from beyond the arc. Her 22 points were the most points she has scored in a game this season, and it was her 13th double-digit scoring effort. Junior center Taryn Woodson recorded her MAC Commonwealth leading 12th double-double with 15 points and 11 boards. Miranda Liebtag finished with eight points, while Camila Sosa added six.

Alvernia (14-8, 6-5) roared out of the gate in the first quarter, outscoring the Eagles 28-10 to grab an 18-point advantage. Woodson scored Eastern's first four points, but the Golden Wolves used a 13-0 run over a three-plus minute span to go up by double digits. A Trinity Upton triple cut the Eastern deficit to 23-10, but the Golden Wolves scored five straight points to end the first quarter. The Eagles struggled to make shots in the opening 10 minutes, shooting just four-of-11 from the field.

Over the next two quarters, the Eagles did not closer than 10 points, but their offense was much more efficient. Eastern made 15-of-27 field goals and three-of-six from distance, good for 55 percent. Johnson scored 13 of her 22 points in the second and third frames, including a pair of threes.

Eastern saved their best offense for the final 10 minutes, outscoring the Golden Wolves 21-12 on nine-of-13 shooting from the field (69.23 percent). Trailing by 12 after three, the Eagles scored the first eight points in the fourth, cutting the Alvernia lead down to four. Sosa hit a layup in the paint, Johnson knocked down a three, and Woodson scored a free throw and a jumper to make it 55-51 Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves briefly pushed the lead back to six, but the Eagles continued to apply pressure. Liebtag, Tyerra Jarvis, Upton, and Johnson scored points on four consecutive possessions to tie the contest at 59-59 with 2:06 on the clock, but the Eagles were never able to take the lead. Alvernia took the advantage back for good on their following possession, and Karmonick followed with six free throws in a row to stave off the Eastern comeback. The Eagles had one final sign of life on a Johnson three with 12 seconds left, but could not find the go-ahead basket.

Eastern (8-13, 4-7) returns home on Saturday to take on the Hood College Blazers at The NEST. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
