CHESTER, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Volleyball hit an impressive .354 on the way to a three-set MAC Commonwealth win at Widener.
Logan Martin had ten kills and six blocks and
Hannah Pringle finished with 13 kills as the Eagles ran their winning streak to 11 matches.
The two teams were tied at nine in the opening set.
Emma Flores delivered a kill, and
Grace Cooper served four-straight points to build a 14-9 lead. Martin had two kills and a solo block in the run. To close out the set, the Eagles were successful on six-of-seven serve receive opportunities on the way to a 25-16 win in the set. In the first set, Pringle had six kills on seven swings and Martin had five kills and two blocks.
Grace Casagrande had nine of her 22 digs in the opening set.
The Pride hid .147 with ten kills in the opening set. As the Eastern defense ramped up for the final two sets, they would finish the day with a negative hitting percentage. The Eagles have held their last five opponents, and six of their last seven, to negative offensive numbers.
In addition to a strong presence at the net, the Eastern defensive specialists, led by Casagrande, kept the ball off the floor. Eastern finished with eight blocks and 56 digs. No Widener player had more than four kills in the match.
Carrying their serve-receive momentum from the first set into the second, the Eagles went 11-for-11 in sideout chances in the second set. Without giving up points while receiving serve, the Eagles saw their lead ratchet upwards quickly. Three of the first four Eastern servers would earn points.
Pringle had five more kills in the second set. Flores, Martin, and
Jailene Lugo all had three as
Elle Jiron-Bujanda spread the ball around. The Eagles won the second set 25-10.
Viviana Fragoso,
Bridgette Kelly, and
Grace Cooper all had big runs at the service line in the third. Kelly served three aces in a row in a nine-point run. The Eagles had five of their seven aces in winning the final set 25-7.
Jiron-Bujanda finished with 37 assists.
"We played well," Head Coach
Mark Birtwistle said after the game. "I told them that. We have been talking about raising the bar, and we did what we needed to do tonight. Winning matches in the league is very important to us and we were focused."
The Eagles (13-2, 2-0) will travel to New York for a pair of tough matches this weekend. The Eagles will play at No. 25 Ithaca on Friday and then go to Cortland for a match agains the 11-2 Red Dragons at 1 pm on Saturday.
