Volleyball Falls in Four at #24 Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y.– Eastern University Womens' Volleyball won the opening set but saw their 11-match winning streak snapped with a four-set loss to the No. 24 Ithaca College Bombers. Hannah Pringle led the Eagles with 12 kills.

In the opening set, the Eagles (13-3) hit .323 with 16 kills. Bridgette Kelly, Jailene Lugo, and Logan Martin each had four kills as the Eagles were successful passing and in transition, Eastern earned points on 13-of-21 first-set sideout chances. The Eagles trailed 13-11 at the midpoint of the set, but a Pringle kill and a pair of Kelly blocks put the Eagles up. They ware able to earn serve receive points down the stretch to win 25-21.

The Eagles held leads in the second set, but a pair of Ithaca aces put the Bombers up 21-19, and another point gave the hosts a three-point edge late. The Eagles earned one point on serve, but could not earn more and Ithaca leveled the match with a 25-22 win in the second.

The match turned with the two teams tied at 14-14 in the third. The Bombers earned a sideout point and then rode five straight service points from Gabriela Gonzalez-Abreu. The 20-14 deficit proved too much to overcome and Ithaca went up by a set. The Eagles, who came into the match ranked fourth in the nation in hitting percentage, were blocked four times and had nine hitting errors in the set against the athletic Ithaca defense.

In the fourth, the Eagles struggled to get into system against the aggressive Bomber serving early and were chasing points for the remainder of the set.  Viviana Fragoso served three straight points to pull the Eagles to within three points at 12-9, but the Bombers responded out of a timeout and pulled away to a 25-15 win.

Grace Casagrande had a match-high 23 digs, and Elle Jiron-Bujanda had 35 assists. Ithaca (11-3) hit .221 for the match and had an 11-4 edge in total blocks.

Eastern will be at Cortland tomorrow at 1 pm. The Red Dragons (11-2) are playing at Hamilton College this evening.
