HACKETTSTOWN, N.J.– Eastern University Men's Soccer scored the first two goals of the match and held on for a 2-1 win at Centenary University on a miserably windy, rainy, and cold afternoon With Tropical Storm Ophelia battering the coast, the wind and rain in central New Jersey made for rough conditions that eliminated a lot of precision and served as a leveling factor in the match.
Almost exactly midway through the first half,
Zach Sievert put the Eagles on the board with his third goal of the year. The first-year midfielder made the goal happen out of nothing. He took a throw-in from the left side and after a quick move buried a shot from 30 yards out in the upper corner.
The Eagles (3-2-2) had a 12-4 edge in first-half shots.
In the 51st minute,
Ethan Pfau doubled the Eastern lead with a left-footed blast off the underside of the crossbar. The first-year forward earned the opportunity with hard pressure after the Eagles lost the ball deep in Cyclone territory.
Centenary (0-8-1) closed the gap with a penalty kick goal int he 58th minute, but the Eastern defense kept the Cyclones off the board through the rest of the day. The Eagles finished with a 27-10 edge in shots.
"It was a really tough day to play," Head Coach
Luca Mellor said after the game. "With the wind, any ball in the air was nearly impossible to judge. The penalty kick came on just a strange rebound. On another day it probably does not happen. It was good to get out with a win."
Ty Bleiler made four saves int he win.
With the match at Penn State Berks not being played, Eastern Men's Soccer added an additional match against New York University on Oct. 3. NYU will host the match at NJIT in Newark, N.J.
