Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late Score Saves Draw for Men's Soccer

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.–Eastern University Men's Soccer (3-2-3) scored an eleventh-hour equalizer to save a draw with the visiting Neumann University Knights. In the 86th minute, Zach Sievert scored his fourth of the year to salvage the tie and enable the Eagles to run their unbeaten streak to four matches.

Sievert's heroics became necessary after the Knights opened the scoring in the 80th minute. Neumann had five second-half corner kicks and a 10-3 edge in shots after intermission, but their goal came out a long throw from the right side. The toss came into the box, and a missed clear gave the Knights a free header from six yards out. Vince Landis skimmed the ball over Ty Bleiler for the lead.

Down a goal, the Eagles recovered some of their form that had them creating chances in the first half. Several moments of attacking pressure went unrewarded, but aggressive counter pressing enabled the Eagles to move up the field and create dangerous restarts. The Eagles did not score on a restart chance, but Matthew Capuano won short clear in the middle of the field and flipped a pass to Ethan Pfau at the top of the box. Pfau took a touch to settle the pass and slipped a pass between a pair of Neumann defenders. Sievert's right-footed shot slipped just Inside the far post.

The Knights had the final two shots of the match, but they could put neither on frame. Bleiler finished with four saves.

While the match did not have early goals, it did not lack for chances. While both teams had good opportunities in the opening 45 minutes, the Eagles had a tremendous stretch with three consecutive golden opportunities in the in a three minute stretch around the 20-minute mark. Manny Park had a right-footed effort slip wide left, and Pfau had two opportunities from in close miss the frame.

At the half hour mark, Neumann's Jon Zubert beat Bleiler with a chip after a long ball over the top, but the ball grazed off the outside of the left upright for a goal kick. Five minutes later, Andres Velez hit a short clear of a corner kick with a first-time shot the missed just wide.

"Both teams really could have had two goals at halftime," Head Coach Luca Mellor said after the match. "We did not sustain our pressure as well at the start of the second half and it put us on our heels. We will work to fix this for the conference schedule."

The draw is the third in the past four matches for the Eagles. They will open the MAC Commonwealth season at Hood College at 2:00 pm on Saturday.
