Men's Soccer Settles for a Draw against Delaware Valley

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– For the second straight match, Eastern University Men's Soccer scored first but had to settle for a draw. In today's 2-2 draw with Delaware Valley, the Eagles (2-2-2) had a 16-10 edge in total shots, but they were unable to find a late game-winner. It is the first time the Eagles have played the Aggies in match since Eastern moved from the MAC Freedom.

Eastern found the opening goal on a good move out of the back. Zach Sievert found space in the middle and slid a ball out to left flank. Manny Pak took the ball in a wide position and pushed it central with his first touch. The sophomore forward curled a hard shot inside the right upright for his first career goal.

The Eagles controlled play for most of the first half, but like last Saturday at Cabrini, they were unable to double their lead while they had the better of play. Ethan Pfau had a shot from top of the box slip just wide in the 30th minute, and Jake Morales nearly beat the goalie with a little chip after a brilliant pass over the top from Sievert in the 42nd minute. Aggie goalkeeper Andrew Roberto got enough his shot to push the ball just wide for a corner kick.

Matt Foxworth had a chance on the first corner, but his shot was blocked and the Eagles were unable to create a chance from the second corner.

Out of the locker room, the Aggies had the better of play. On the second of two corners, in the 58th minute, Ty Bleiler tried to clear space for himself and was called for a foul. The Aggies converted the ensuing penalty kick.

Moments later, the Eagles got a penalty kick opportunity on a scary foul at the goal line. Aidan Link converted.

The Aggies again found an equalizer after another Eastern foul. The Eagles did not win one of their own goal kicks near midfield, and a seemingly harmless flighted ball into the middle of the field turned into a free kick chance from thirty yards out. With Bleiler staring into the sun, Del Val center back Amos Debah bent the ball around the Eastern wall into the lower corner.

The Aggies (3-2-1) found their chances of myriad long throws and free kicks in deep positions. Bleiler made a stunning save on a header from the left side that was headed into the upper corner in the 81st minute.

The Eagles had their three best chances in the final six minutes. On a corner in the 85th minute, Foxworth had a header from the middle of the box punched away. With both center backs up, the Aggies had a chance in transition the other way, but Bleiler came off his line with conviction to clear the ball away. The Aggies attacked again with more numbers. Steven Fajardo won the ball and flipped it forward. Pfau collected the ball in the midfield and found Sievert on the right side. Sivert beat his mark and pushed the ball behind Debah for what looked like a clear chance. Debah wrapped up Sievert before the box to deny the goal scoring opportunity.

The Eagles went up a player, but were unable to convert on the immediate free kick chance. IN the final seconds, Pak had a chance from inside the box slip past the right upright.

Eastern will be at Centenary University on Saturday.
