HAVERFORD, Pa. - Two first period goals for the host Fords proved to be the difference on Friday night as Eastern Field Hockey dropped a 2-0 decision to Haverford in its season opener at Swan Field. The Fords dominated the shot column, 22-7, and kept consistent offensive pressure on the Eagles throughout the entirety of the contest. It was the third straight game between the two schools where Eastern was unable to find the back of the cage.
The Fords set the tone early, with seven of their 22 shots coming in the opening frame. Anna Bradley broke the scoreless tie 3:52 into the contest, and added her second goal less than six minutes later to give Haverford a lead it would not relinquish.
The Eagles created more offensive chances in the third quarter with six of their nine penalty corners and five of their seven shots coming in the frame. However, Eastern was unable to put a shot on Haverford goalie Mary Smith as the Haverford defense kept the Eagles in check.
Sophomore midfielder
Paige Brouse led the Eagles with three shots, while
Kara Frantz,
Morgan Unruh,
Jenna Reider, and
Abby Hakes each finished with one shot apiece. Despite the final score, senior goalie
Abby Agapito stood tall against a stout Haverford attack with 13 saves, including one on a penalty stroke in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 6, for its home opener against Immaculata. The contest is set to begin at 4:00 pm.
