ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey scored twice int he final five minutes of the third quarter to rally to a 3-2 win over the visiting Immaculata University Mighty Macs (0-2).
Morgan Unruh finished the match with a goal and an assist to pace the Eastern attack.
The Mighty Macs took a 2-1 lead on a broken play in the opening seconds of the third quarter. Immaculata forward Lauren Vandenbraak was fouled trying to pick off a back pass, and she took advantage of a quick restart to race in on goal. She converted the breakaway attempt.
The goal came after a strong second quarter for the Eagles where they had the bulk of the action in and around the Mighty Mac circle.
Emma Kircher had consecutive chances nearly in the goalie's pads in the final seconds of the half, but the two teams went to the break even at 1-1. The Eagles had a 5-3 edge in first half shots.
Down a goal, the Eagles found an opportunity in the 41st minute after
Keishla Figueroa earned the edge of the circle and found Unruh in a deep position to the goalie's right. She pushed a ball into a dangerous space. Groff then won the battle for the ball and pushed it over the line to tie the score.
Shauger scored off a rebound with 12 seconds left in the period.
Kara Frantz made a strong dribbling run off the left flank and blasted a low shot right at the edge of the circle. Shauger was in the right spot and pushed the rebound inside the right post from 10 yards out. The goal came on the Eagles seventh shot of the quarter.
The Eagles had a pair of fourth quarter penalty corners, but neither team registered a shot in the final frame.
Abby Agapito was credited with just two saves, but the senior goalie came up big coming off her line to clear balls from danger and break up chances before they turned into shots.
Grace Wise also made several big plays to secure the lead. With nine and a half minutes to play, it seemed that Vanderbraak would have another breakaway chance, but Wise had her angles right and made a clean tackle just as the Immaculata forward earned the circle.
Unruh scored the opening goal of the match, Eastern's first of the season, after a well-developed play on the left side.
Jenna Reider drove deep and brought the Immaculata defenders to the endline before dropping a pass toward midfield. Kircher gathered the ball and ripped a cross. Unruh finished to give the Eagles the lead. Immaculata answered 90 seconds later on a penalty corner goal.
Eastern (1-1) will host Stockton University on Saturday at 11:00 am.
