OWINGS MILLS, Md. - In its final road contest of the season, Eastern Baseball fell behind early and, in a spirited comeback effort, came up one run short in a 7-6 loss to Stevenson on Monday afternoon. Eastern scored all six of their runs after the fourth inning, but were unable to recover from a pair of three-run frames from the Mustangs.
After a scoreless first frame, Stevenson struck first in the second on an RBI single from Dylan Scott. The Mustangs (19-17, 11-11) added three runs in the third on a Tommy Holcomb sacrifice fly and a two-run single from Trevor Smoot to increase their advantage to 4-0.
Eastern scored their first run of the day in the top of the fifth on a two-out home run for
Griffin Falco. The junior catcher from Matawan, N.J. hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season over the left field wall to cut the Stevenson lead to 4-1.
Evan Barks doubled and
Brian Lang walked to start the top of the sixth, and the Eagles would go on to score two more runs.
Sean Cottrell hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Barks, and
Brock Langlotz followed with an RBI single through the left side to make it 4-3 Stevenson. The Eagles still had a pair of runners on base, but could not find the equalizer.
Stevenson used another three-run inning in the bottom of the sixth to regain a four-run advantage. With the bases-loaded, a wild pitch scored Alex Russo, and a two-run single from Amani Jones put the Mustangs back ahead 7-4.
The Eagles got two runs back in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Lang and a bases-loaded walk to Langlotz. Eastern put together their final rally in the ninth. With runners at the corner with one out,
David Hunsberger scored Cottrell on a sacrifice fly to make it 7-6 Stevenson. However, the Eagles were unable to complete the comeback.
Langlotz and Falco combined for six hits, two runs scored, and three RBI, while Barks, Cottrell,
Joe Paradise, and
Logan Klember each finished with one knock apiece. Lang and Hunsberger each finished with a run batted in.
Eastern (10-28, 5-17) will conclude its 2023 season tomorrow afternoon with a pair of seven-inning contests at home against the Mustangs. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
