GRANTHAM, Pa. - In its second league doubleheader of the season, Eastern Softball dropped a pair of contests to Messiah on the road. A first-inning grand slam set the tone for the Falcons in an 8-5 game one triumph, and a three-run third proved to be all that was needed in a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
Eastern loaded the bases with nobody out in the first inning on a walk, a single, and a hit by pitch, but Messiah was able to escape the jam with three straight outs. The Falcons (19-8, 7-1) also loaded the bases in their half of the first and capitalized on a grand slam from Paige Eakes to take a 4-0 advantage they would not relinquish.
Sami Britton hit her second home run of the year in the top of the third to trim the Messiah lead to three, but a two-run double from Allie Book pushed the Falcons' lead back to five. Eastern cut the lad back down to two on a two-run triple from
Alyssa Binczak and an RBI double from
Tori Hook in the fourth, but another two runs from the Falcons in the fifth stifled another Eagles' comeback attempt.
Hook finished finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while
Kelci Cost finished with two hits and a run scored. Binczak finished with a triple and pair of RBI, while Britton and
Susana Perez each drove in a run.
After two scoreless innings to begin game two, the Falcons scored three runs in the third, taking advantage of a pair of Eastern errors and a wild pitch. Binczak cut into the Falcons lead in the fifth inning with a two-run single up the middle to make it 3-2. The Eagles had the bases loaded with one out, but could not bring the tying or go-ahead runs home. Eastern stranded two runners in the sixth as its comeback came up one run short.
Sophie Rollins finished 3-for-3 with a run scored in the nightcap, while Binczak finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
Sydney Ostolaza also recorded a pair of hits for Eastern.
The Eagles (14-7, 2-2) will be back in St. Davids on Wednesday for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader against Hood. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
