Softball Sweeps Hood in Home Doubleheader

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - On another beautiful afternoon, Eastern Softball got back to its winning ways with a pair of wins over Hood at the EU Softball Field. Mackenzie Laub, Susana Perez, and Kelci Cost combined for six hits, four extra base knocks, and five RBIs in a 7-0 win in game one, before a RBI fielders choice from Laub and the first career save from Bryn Clifford lifted the Eagles to a 2-1 triumph in game two.

After a scoreless first inning, Eastern (16-7, 4-2) scored four of their seven runs in the second on a pair of hits and two Hood fielding errors. Jania Long reached first on an error to start the inning, and after she stole second, Perez drove her home on a single to right field to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Perez later scored on an double steal, before Cost plated Rollins with a single up the middle for a 3-0 advantage. Cost capped off the scoring on a Hood wild pitch to increase Eastern's lead to 4-0.

In the circle, Victoria Perez pitched masterfully, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning before giving up an infield single. Perez (5-2) allowed just the one hit and three total baserunners while striking out two over five innings of work.

Eastern added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth. After a leadoff double from Alyssa Binczak, Laub crushed a two-run bomb to left center, the second of her career, to put the Eagles ahead 7-0. It's her first home run since her two-run shot against Dubuque during Spring Break. After escaping a jam in the sixth, Clifford pitched a perfect seventh to secure the shutout.

After just two hits in game one, Hood (8-18, 1-7) recorded two hits in the first inning as Rebecca Gottlieb singled and Rachel Benden doubled her home for an early 1-0 lead. Sami Britton answered for Eastern in the bottom of the second, doubling home Sydney Ostolaza from first base to tie the contest at 1-1.

Both offenses went stagnant over the next few innings until Eastern scored the game-winning run in the fifth. With runners on second and third with one out, Laub hit a hard grounder to third base that took a tough bounce into the outfield. Rollins would go on to score, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Hood made it interesting in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with two hits and a pair of fielders choices with two outs. Clifford, however, never wavered, striking out Gottlieb to shut the door and secure Eastern's third home doubleheader sweep of the season. It was the first career save for Clifford.

Long (5-3) picked up her fifth win in the circle, scattering five hits and allowing one earned run while striking out five in six innings of work.

Eastern will be back in action on Saturday afternoon for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader against Widener. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
