ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Eastern University Baseball returned to campus early to complete a MAC Commonwealth series against the York College Spartans. Despite keeping things close in the opening innings, the Eagles were unable to solve York starter Bryce Shaffer, and the Spartans rode a pair of big innings late to pull away to a 15-4 win.
John Westfield struck out four and allowed only two earned runs in four innings of work, The Spartans scored a pair of runs off
Zackary Bollinger and then took advantage of Eastern miscues for three unearned tallies in the sixth.
The Eagles scored on a
Brian Lang leadoff home run in the eighth and again on a three-run pinch-hit shot from
Austin Utterbaugh in the ninth, but that came after the Spartans put up seven runs in the top of the inning to break the game open. It was the first career home run for Utterbaugh.
The Eagles finished with ten hits, but every player in the York starting line-up had a hit and scored at least one run. The two teams split the series-opening doubleheader with a pair of one-run games at York.
Eastern (8-21, 4-12) is back in action at The Yard tomorrow afternoon with a league doubleheader against Widener. The opening game starts at noon.
