Baseball Drops Home Doubleheader to Widener

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - On a beautiful day at The Yard, Eastern Baseball completed its season series with the Widener Pride. A pair of big innings in each game, along with the long ball, proved to be the difference as the Pride came away with 15-4 and 13-4 triumphs. Widener finished with seven home runs and 28 total hits over the course of the afternoon.

Widener started the scoring in game one on a Justin Costanzo sacrifice fly in the first inning and a Stephen Posner RBI single in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Eastern struck back in the bottom of the third with a pair of home runs to grab a 3-2 advantage. Matt McHale tied the contest on a two-run shot to left center, his third of the season and 14th of his career, and Brock Langlotz followed with his first collegiate home run over the left field wall to put the Eagles ahead.

However, the Pride quickly regained control of the contest with a nine-run fourth inning. Widener hit three home runs in the frame and scored eight of those runs before an out was recorded. The Eagles never threatened the rest of the way, and the Pride added two runs in each the sixth and seventh innings to secure the victory.

Fresh off being named the MAC Commonwealth Player-of-the-Week, Evans Barks stayed red-hot in game one, finishing 3-for-4 with a run scored. Langlotz also finished game one 3-for-4 from the dish with a run scored and a pair of RBIs, while McHale finished with a home run and two runs batted in.

The Eagles took an early lead in game two on a Mark Cruser RBI single and a Widener throwing error, but again, the Pride had an answer. Widener hit three more home runs on its way to a six-run third, before adding three runs in the fourth and four more runs in the fifth to take a lead they would not relinquish. McHale hit a two-run single in the fourth to cut the lead to five, but that was as close as the Eagles would get.

McHale finished game two with a hit and two RBIs, while Cruser and Camden Angell recorded the other two hits for the Eagles in the nightcap.

Eastern (8-23, 4-14) will travel to the Trenton Thunder Stadium tomorrow evening to take on the Cairn Highlanders. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
