ASTON, Pa. - On a cold, cloudy Saturday afternoon, Eastern Women's Lacrosse dropped a 13-6 decision to Neumann. The Knights (2-1) scored the first three goals of the contest in the first quarter of action and never trailed the rest of the way.
Ellie Pruitt led the Eagles with two goals, while
Gracie Horton,
Emerson Shauger,
Teresa Gailey, and
Caitlyn Quizon each scored one.
After a scoreless opening minutes, Neumann finally broke the tie on a goal from Lindsay Fagan, her first of six on the afternoon. Brylin Adams made it 2-0 just over two minutes later, but Fagan scored again with less than a minute remaining to give the Knights a 3-0 lead.
Pruitt scored Eastern's first goal of the afternoon early in the second quarter. After taking a pass from Quizon behind the net, Pruitt wrapped around and fired a low shot that beat Neumann goalkeeper Catriona Corrigan. However, the Knights answered back with three more goals of their own to take a 6-1 lead into halftime.
Eastern played its best lacrosse in the third quarter, scoring four goals to cut Neumann's lead to five heading into the fourth quarter.
Teresa Gailey scored her second goal of the season on Eastern's first offensive possession, taking a pass from Shauger and firing a ball from the left alley that found twine. Neumann scored the next three goals to regain a seven-goal advantage, but Eastern scored the final three goals of the period to to close the gap.
Shauger bounced a long shot from the circle past Corrigan for Eastern's third goal, before Quizon beat the Neumann defense on the right side to score her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Pruitt added her second goal on a man-up opportunity to make it 9-5 heading with a minute left. Gracie Horton scored Eastern's last goal in the fourth, her second at the college level.
For the game, Eastern finished with 15 ground balls and successful clears on 15 of their 19 attempts, but struggled with draw control, winning just seven of the game's 23. Shauger led the Eagles with eight shots, while Gailey picked up three ground balls.
Eastern will be back in action on Wednesday in Glenside where they will take on Arcadia. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm.
